Xarinath was an orphan of Iriksha who slept beneath a collapsed archway and begged for scraps. Merchants beat her, and she remembers every face that spat on her, kicked her away, or laughed when she fell.
At thirteen, Irinax spoke in the dark, promising the city would kneel. Xarinath followed the voice into the tunnels and was given to the Daughters of the Spider God. The metamorphosis nearly killed her; after three days her body reshaped itself into something worthy, and the priestesses knelt.
She forgets none of her tormentors. When Irinax calls for sacrifice, Xarinath chooses from her catalogue: the merchant who broke her fingers was third, and the boy who laughed was ninth.
